Description
Princess Faris of the Khoran Empire has learned how to hide her homicidal intentions with polite smiles and quiet betrayals. She thinks she will be a pawn when her father makes a marriage deal with the Alarean Kingdom and sends Faris to marry Prince Azaeh as a sign of peace. Instead, she is thrown into a beautiful palace full of plots, where lords hide daggers and every toast could mean the end of her life.
Azaeh, who is the heir to a kingdom that has been torn apart by wars amongst his own family, greets Faris with chilly politeness and a steely look of distrust. His recollections are tormented by burned-down villages and the sounds of families being torn apart by his forebears. He is responsible for protecting his realm through this union, therefore he decides to keep a close eye on Faris, believing that her presence will only lead to another treachery. But from their first exhilarating meeting, when her disobedience meets his relentless watchfulness, an unmistakable flame ignites, putting both the heir and the hostage on a collision course that neither can avoid.
As they walk through moonlit gardens and banquets full of poisonous foods, Faris and Azaeh discover a maze of hidden plans: secret sisterhoods that worship old gods in dark catacombs, mysterious prophecies written in blood that tie their fates together, and a secret group of nobles planning to start a rebellion. Faris’s experience in finding poisons and lies becomes her best weapon, while Azaeh’s guerilla tactics, learned on battlefields torn apart by conflict, show how hard it is to get peace.
In stolen moments under vaulted galleries, their partnership changes from one of need to one of trust, which is more dangerous. Faris instructs Azaeh how to recognize the person behind the armor of duty. He also shows her how to use her weakness as a shield. But every secret they tell each other makes the risk greater: would choosing love over loyalty start a revolution, or will their resistance create a new kingdom based on unity instead of tyranny?
Tahereh Mafi’s writing is just as brutal as her world. It mixes explosive action, like a midnight escape through aqueducts rigged with traps and a high-stakes duel on a rain-slick marble floor, with moments of deep intimacy, like a whispered promise in a deserted hallway and a tear-stained confession written on ancient parchment. The book is full of moral ambiguity, asking if real power comes from conquering or from having the strength to forgive.
Faris and Azaeh must determine if their link will rescue two empires or break them forever by the end of the Hall of Weavers, where threads of destiny are supposed to cross. This Woven Kingdom is an unending story of blood-spun prophecy, deadly politics, and a love that dares to change the very nature of battle.
