Description

Dr. Anna Fox spends her days looking out the windows of her New York City townhouse and living through her neighbors’ lives because a terrible event made her housebound. Anna deals with her agoraphobia by rewriting letters for the future, carefully keeping track of her memories, and taking a lot of medicine to keep her mind in a fragile state. She is haunted by guilt and can’t sleep.

Her online buddies and a rotating group of caregivers and therapists are the only people she talks to outside of her home. They try, but fail, to get her to leave. The Russells, a picture-perfect family, move in across the street and change Anna’s normal life. Anna watches their nighttime routines via binoculars because she is interested in their beautiful daughter and lovely husband. She imagines an idealistic picture of the happy home life she used to have.

But one night, when it was dark and raining, Anna saw a furious fight in the Russells’ house. She contacts the police because she thinks she saw a murder, but they don’t believe her when they don’t find any proof. Pictures show vacant beds, and the Russells don’t seem to be hurt. People say that Anna’s allegations are just delusions caused by her being alone and the negative effects of her medicine. Her closest friend and the main detective start to question how trustworthy she is.

Anna starts her own inquiry because she is determined to show that she is not going crazy. She searches her house for clues like video footage, fingerprints, and stray medications, and she puts together bits of conversations she heard. A concealed camera, an injury that can’t be explained, and strange phone conversations that stop suddenly all add to the mystery. Anna’s life turns into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, where every visitor could be an enemy and every step brings a new threat.

As Anna gets closer to the truth, she has to face her own dark past. Flashbacks show the terrible event that first kept her inside: a vehicle crash that killed people and left scars that were worse than any physical pain. These memories come back to me in vivid, confusing detail, making it hard to tell what’s real and what’s a nightmare. Anna’s house, which used to be a safe place, turns into a maze of terror and lies. Rooms she knows well become threats, and voices she trusts whisper betrayal.

Anna faces her neighbor’s husband in a locked room at the end of the story, racing against time to rescue an innocent life and reveal a conspiracy that is even more twisted than she thought. Secrets come out at an alarming rate, showing who can be trusted, who has to be stopped, and how one woman’s bravery can break the bonds of fear.
