Description
Rafe Mist has made a name for himself by sneaking into the night, stealing expensive jewels from rich nobles, and getting away before the city guards can sound the alarm. Rafe sees his biggest paycheck when a mysterious benefactor gives him a fortune to take the Blade of Veiled Dawn, the famous weapon that is claimed to control shadows. But as soon as he takes the blade with the blue hilt out of the palace vault, everything goes wrong.
The Blade is more than just an object; it is a living channel of forbidden power that conflicting groups at the royal court want. Rafe is suddenly being chased by the Queen’s elite Shadow Wardens, a ruthless bounty hunter who knows every alley in Veloria, and a secret group of mages who are using him to fulfill an ancient prophecy: that the true bearer of the Blade will either bring the world into chaos or save it from a darkness older than memory.
Elinora Vale, the mages’ apprentice, is forced to work with him. She is a motivated young sorceress who is caught between her devotion to her employers and her pity for Rafe’s difficult situation. He sets out on a dangerous trek through borderlands full with huge war monsters and mercenary warlords. Elinora teaches Rafe how to feel the Blade’s magic, while Rafe teaches Elinora how to break locks and hide, which are talents that no spellbook can teach.
They go on a quest that takes them to the Lost Library of Ashandar, where Rafe finds a hidden chapter from the first Age that tells the story of how the Blade picked its owner and how the city of Veloria was created on the bones of those who failed its test. On the way, they have to outsmart three assassins, make uneasy peace with pirate captains on the Serpent’s Coast, and face the necromantic horrors that are in the way of the Blade.
Rafe has to make an impossible choice as their link grows stronger: give the Blade to his unknown boss and make a lot of money, or destroy it and risk making enemies with everyone in the realm. He has to face the ghosts of his past the treachery that left him an orphan on the streets, the friendship he gave up, and the rare spark of honor that still burns in his heart. He has to do it quickly.
In a magnificent ending set in Veloria’s citadel, where the towers are tossed by the wind, Rafe and Elinora fight the Queen’s commander, a powerful warlock whose magic may destroy the city. Rafe can only unlock the weapon’s complete power by giving up his own gain. This is when the Blade’s actual purpose is revealed. He must choose whether he will be remembered as a thief who rescued the realm or as the person who caused its downfall.
